Telstra honoured by visit of Vice President Xi

Telstra CEO, Mr David Thodey, today previewed Telstra’s latest High Definition Telehealth Solution before a meeting with China’s Vice President, Mr Xi Jinping, and seven senior Chinese Government Ministers at Telstra’s Melbourne headquarters.

Telstra, which is the largest Australian employer in greater China and has a long-term relationship with the Chinese Government and industry built over the past 20 years, was honoured to host the Vice President and his Ministerial colleagues during their official visit to Australia.

Mr Thodey was joined at the meeting by Telstra International Group Managing Director, Mr Tarek Robbiati, who is responsible for the management of Telstra’s multiple business interests and assets internationally, including across the Asia Pacific region.

“Our business investments in China and the broader Asia Pacific region will play an increasingly important part of our company’s future,” Mr Thodey said.

At today’s meeting Telstra shared its experience in developing applications, such as the Telstra High Definition Telehealth Solution, which delivers real-time connectivity over high-speed wireless and fixed networks.

“This telemedicine solution, delivered over our Telstra network, is an example of how technology can contribute to people’s health care needs while also enhancing productivity and saving costs,” Mr Thodey said.

Telstra was also pleased to host Telstra’s technology partner ZTE’s President, Mr Shi Lirong, at the meeting with Vice President Xi.

Telstra and the Chinese company ZTE earlier this month built on the commercial relationship between the two companies and signed an agreement to build the largest national LTE network in the region in Hong Kong.

“We are very pleased to partner with ZTE, in Hong Kong and Australia, and we look forward to continuing to leverage what we have learned in our markets and develop our China-based businesses in mutually constructive ways," Mr Thodey said.

Telstra's relationship with the Chinese Government commenced in 1989 when Telstra signed a MoU for cooperation and assistance with the Chinese Academy of Space Technology.

"With interests in Hong Kong's largest mobile operator, CSL New World, China's largest real estate internet site SouFun and seven other online content businesses, Telstra is the largest Australian company employer in greater China,” Mr Thodey said.
