0870 update information

Changes are coming to 0870 numbers. This page provides you with all the information you need to manage your 0870 numbers successfully.

What is happening to 0870s?
A new regulation is coming into effect that will cut the cost of calling 0870 numbers. This regulation removes the existing revenue share option and it also means most 0870 owners will now have to pay for calls made to their 0870 numbers.

When is this happening?
These changes will come into effect on 1st August 2009.

Why is this happening?
The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, conducted research which indicated that charges associated with some non geographic numbers – particularly 0870 – were not clear and caused confusion for consumers. Ofcom is aiming to remove this confusion by eliminating revenue share for 0870 and providing one consistent rate for calls to those numbers.

You can find out more information about Ofcom’s decision at http://www.ofcom.org.uk/.

What are my options?
As 0870 numbers will no longer offer revenue share, we believe that the 0871 and 0844 ranges are natural alternative for customers looking to retain their income. However, Telstra offers a whole range of non geographic numbers, all with different benefits. To help customers decide the best course of action, we’ve put together a fact sheet which you can download here.

Fraud Alert: 020 7965 4934

We have been made aware that members of the public have been receiving unsolicited calls, apparently from the above number. This number is within the number ranges that have been allocated to Telstra International for the use of its customers.

We can confirm that the number in question is not active on our system and is not being used to make any calls. We believe that the person making the calls has fraudulently changed the way their real number appears on telephone systems to show the inactive number (i.e. it is a 'spoofed' number). Some of these calls have been sent to our own customers via our network and we are currently trying to identify the true origin of these calls.
