Killby & Gayford - IP VPN

Leading construction contractor Killby & Gayford deployed an IP-based VPN to support two new offices and a large team of remote workers. The network provides a flexible, scalable and cost effective platform for a growing business.

The challenge

Founded in 1860, Killby & Gayford provides high quality building, refurbishment and fit-out services, responsive maintenance, security and joinery supplies for both the private and public sector. The company has recently handled many high-profile projects including work on heritage sites such as St. Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Central Hall and Cambridge University.

Despite the economic downturn that started to affect the construction industry in 2008, Killby & Gayford enjoy strong success. It secured a series of new contract wins, particularly in Cambridge and London, and decided to open two new regional offices to support its additional business. At the time, the company’s three existing offices were connected via an Ethernet-based network. However, Killby & Gayford found that this communications
infrastructure could not support its expanding business model and growth aspirations.

Due to the nature of its work, nearly a third of Killby & Gayford’s 300 employees are mobile. Engineers, designers and contract managers need to be able to communicate with headquarters from building sites and customer premises all over the UK. Killby & Gayford
therefore wanted to allow its mobile employees to access centrally hosted applications more quickly and securely.

The solution

After evaluating the capabilities of several telecommunications providers, Killby & Gayford chose Telstra International to build and run its new network. It selected Telstra because of the company’s strength in network connectivity and its broad portfolio of data hosting and managed services.

After discussing its requirements with Telstra, Killby & Gayford implemented an Internet Protocol (IP) Virtual Private Network (VPN). Delivered using Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology, this network provides a simple and cost effective way for the company to connect its three existing offices and two new offices, at locations across London, Cambridge and Essex. The IP VPN also provides a secure and reliable gateway for mobile employees to use to connect to core applications.
